Moving House in London Without Taking a Day Off

By the Top London Removals operations team · Last updated 19 June 2026

You can move home in London without using a day of annual leave by booking an evening or weekend slot, having the crew pack and unpack, and handing over the logistics of parking, lifts and the ULEZ. We work eight in the morning until ten at night, seven days a week, at no weekend surcharge, so the move fits around your working week rather than interrupting it.

Book a weekend or evening slot

The simplest way to keep your leave intact is to move when you are not working. We run moves across London on Saturdays and Sundays, and into the evening on weekdays, at the same fixed price as any weekday. There is no surcharge for the timing.

Weekend dates are popular, so book early. That also gives the council time to confirm any parking suspension for the moving day.

Let the movers pack and unpack

Packing is where most of the time goes. Full packing, from around 150 pounds, means the crew boxes your whole home with quality materials, labels by room and unpacks at the other end. You arrive to a home that works, not a wall of boxes.

If you would rather keep some control, partial packing covers just the kitchen and fragile items, leaving you the easy parts to do in the evenings beforehand.

Hand over the logistics

We arrange the parking suspension with your borough council at both ends, book any goods lift, and run a ULEZ-compliant fleet so no daily charge appears on your bill. The Congestion Charge is included where the route crosses the central zone.

Because we handle these, you are not taking calls to the council or the building manager during your working day.

A realistic no-day-off timeline

A typical plan: confirm the quote and date early in the week, let us pack on the Friday evening or Saturday morning, move on the Saturday, and unpack the same day. By Sunday you are settled, and Monday is a normal working day.

For larger homes we may pack the day before and move across a full weekend day, still without touching your weekday leave.

When you will still need to be there

You will want to be present, or send someone you trust, at the start of packing and at both ends of the move, to point out fragile items, confirm what goes where, and hand over or collect keys. That aside, the heavy lifting, driving and reassembly are ours, on your days off rather than your working ones.

Why London moves are harder to fit around work

A standard London house move has several components that do not naturally fit within an hour either side of a working day: council parking suspension administration, goods lift bookings in purpose-built blocks, access coordination with letting agents or solicitors, and the physical time required to load and unload even a modest inventory. A two-bedroom flat in Islington with a goods lift booking and a parking suspension on both ends can take six to eight hours from start to finish.

Most removal companies operate conventional business hours, which means the available slots are Tuesday to Friday, 8am start, finishing by mid-afternoon. For someone working a full-time role in the City or Canary Wharf, that window is simply unavailable without leave. The assumption embedded in how many firms schedule their crews means that taking a day off has become the default expectation rather than one option among several.

We do not operate on that model. Our crew availability runs from 8am to 10pm seven days a week, with no additional charge for weekend or evening slots. That single change in operating hours opens up a much wider range of move configurations for people who cannot or do not want to take annual leave.

Evening moves in London: what works and what does not

An evening move typically begins at 5pm or 6pm after the working day ends. For a studio or one-bedroom flat with a pre-packed inventory, a well-organised crew can complete the full job, including travel between properties, within three to four hours. That means a final walk-through at the destination property before 10pm. This works best when both properties have straightforward access and parking can be arranged in advance.

The main constraint on evening moves is not logistics but council services. Parking suspension applications must be submitted to the relevant borough council during their working hours, usually Monday to Friday. This means the suspension for an evening move still needs to be arranged two to five working days beforehand. We handle that on your behalf as part of the job, but it does mean you cannot book an evening move the night before and expect a suspension to be in place.

Goods lift bookings in large residential blocks in areas such as Nine Elms, Stratford or Wapping often have restricted booking windows, typically ending at 6pm. For moves involving these buildings, an early-evening start is usually the practical limit. For period conversions, Victorian terraces and mews houses, there is no such restriction, and an 8pm or 9pm start is entirely workable.

Parking suspensions: the step that makes it possible

The detail that most people overlook when planning a no-day-off move is parking. A removal van needs to park close enough to the property to make carrying practical and safe. On most London streets this requires a formal parking suspension from the relevant borough council. Without it, the crew parks where they can and risks a penalty charge notice, or worse, having the van towed, which adds hours and cost to the job.

In the London Borough of Hackney, the City of Westminster, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Southwark, applications typically need five to ten working days. In some outer boroughs, three working days may suffice. The cost varies by council and is included in our all-in price. We submit the application, liaise with the council and place the suspension signage on both streets if needed.

This arrangement removes the most time-consuming pre-move administrative task from your plate. You do not need to find the correct council web page, fill in the form, arrange payment and track the confirmation while managing your normal workload. We carry out this step as a routine part of every job.

Saturday and Sunday moves: the most practical option

For most people in full-time employment, a Saturday move is the least disruptive option available. Both the move and the settling in can happen over the weekend, leaving work unaffected on either side. We operate Saturdays and Sundays at no surcharge, which is not standard across the London removals market. Many firms add 10 to 20 per cent for weekend slots because their cost base is structured around a Monday to Friday crew model.

Sunday moves carry one specific advantage for moves into or out of the Congestion Charge Zone: the charge applies between noon and 6pm only on Sundays, compared with 7am to 6pm on weekdays. A Sunday morning start that completes before noon avoids the 15-pound charge entirely. Our fixed price includes the Congestion Charge where it applies, but a Sunday morning move inside the zone is one configuration where it simply does not arise.

For house removals involving larger properties, a two-day move across a Saturday and Sunday is also possible. Day one handles packing and the first load; day two completes the delivery and places items in the destination rooms. This spreads the physical effort and reduces the pressure of completing everything in a single session.

What to prepare in advance to make the move efficient

The more preparation done before the crew arrives, the faster the job moves. For an evening or weekend move where you are not also managing a work schedule on the day, this preparation is entirely achievable in the evenings and at weekends before the move date. Start by sorting items into categories: what travels with you, what you are discarding, what needs storage. Label each box with the destination room rather than a description of the contents.

Disassemble any flat-pack furniture you are comfortable dismantling. Large pieces such as wardrobes and bed frames take time to break down on the day, and that time extends the job. If you are using our full packing service, starting from 150 pounds, our crew handles wrapping, boxing and labelling as well. For a partial service, pre-packing kitchen and personal items yourself while leaving the crew to handle furniture and large appliances is a practical split.

Notify your building management in advance if the property has a communal entrance, a goods lift or a concierge. Confirm the access code or fob procedure for both properties. If you are moving out of a rented property, arrange the inventory check-out at least a day before the move so the property is clear of your belongings when the letting agent arrives. These steps are worth more to the efficiency of the move than any equipment or extra crew member.

Storage as a bridge between move dates

Not every no-day-off move resolves into a single clean handover. Completion dates shift, landlords delay, and the gap between leaving one property and gaining access to another is sometimes a matter of days or weeks. Short-term storage removes the pressure of aligning both dates perfectly. Our storage in London starts from 25 pounds per week, with weekly billing so you pay only for the time you use.

A common arrangement for a no-day-off move is to have the crew collect all items on a Saturday, store them over the following week, and deliver to the new property the following Saturday. This removes the need to coordinate two property access windows on the same day and gives you an empty flat for the check-out inspection without requiring leave on either end.

For larger moves where multiple collections or deliveries are involved, we can also hold part of an inventory in storage while the remainder is delivered immediately. A four-bedroom house in Wandsworth moving to a three-bedroom house in Clapham, for example, might keep the furniture from one room in storage for two weeks while the primary delivery is completed. The fixed price covers the move; storage is priced separately and billed weekly.
